I came upon this fantastic French shoe label, LaRare Paris (website is only in French). Designer Nathalie Elharrar started out designing for greats such as Thierry Mugler and Karl Lagerfeld. In 2007, she branched out with her own line, though she still continues to freelance for Anne Valerie Hash and Chapurin. Her borderline fetish wear shoes are astounding. See for yourself:

This was such inspiration for me this winter. It still is.

Moominwhat?

Last week, I had a spurt of memory from my childhood; we were discussing children's books and the ridiculous/silly/weird favorites we had. I was a huge fan of historical fiction, girly books about adventurers and mysteries. Then, I remembered a weird series that I loved with quirky illustrations but couldn't for the life of me remember the title or the author. I called my mom to ask if she could remember the name- the conversation went something like this:

Me: "I'm trying to think of a book series I liked when I was like eight or nine. There were animals, no humans, they weren't real animals though, and the one looked kinda like a squirrel."

Mom: "Uhhh."

Me: "They had a lot of weird adventures, like they rode on a magic carpet and the one had a top hat and if you put things into it they changed into other things."

Mom: "Are you sure you're not thinking of Five Children and It?" (side note: great book)

Me: "Nooo, there weren't any humans, just creatures. There was an ice queen too, and she froze the little squirrel guy. I swear I'm not thinking of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Mom: "Honey, I have no idea what you're talking about."

Me: "There were cute little illustrations, oh and there was a glossary in the back that had a little story explaining each of the characters..."

Mom: "Finn Family Moomintroll!"

Me: "Yesssss."

So there you have it. These books are great. The Finnish author, Tove Jansson, created these weird little creatures and wrote a fantastical, magical series based around the Moomintroll family. I love the little goblin like one with a pipe and flowers in its hair, and the girl/thing with a topknot. The books were made into a comic, but I love the original illustrations:

I think I'm going to try to find the series on eBay, or maybe I'll steal them from my parents house. Too good.

I've been reading a lot of international blogs, mostly Swedish, through Google Translate. There's something charming about the imperfect translation that keeps me hooked.

Impersonation

There are many opportunities for photographers to shoot product; magazines constantly promote everything from accessories to beauty, often in a simple, straightforward manner. When still life product work is given a twist, then, it stands out from the rest. Bela Borsodi, based out of Paris, does countless accessories editorials for magazines from Details to WAD to Elle. His signature is giving a quality of movement or life to inanimate objects, often incorporating cartoon or computer-generated figures. His editorials for mens' magazines often objectify the female figure, reducing it to a voluptuous outline or a hanger for accessories, which I can't stand. His skill with technology and use of innovative displays, however, make him worth a mention, as you can see for yourself.

WAD Magazine had this amazing editorial idolizing the man, the myth, the legend: Karl Lagerfeld. His iconic look is reprised for many characters and though it's severe, I have to say it works.

I love that masculine dressing can take so many forms. There's classic with a tough twist, as shown in the photo from Vogue Paris: it's slim enough to work for a woman, though I'd probably wear heeled boots rather than sneakers. The Vogue UK editorial is tough in the extreme, over-sized, and glamorous, but still very wearable. Lastly, the simplicity of cuffed pants, ankle boots, and a sweater in neutral tones is the least "fashion" but still has an effortless allure. I'm on the hunt for boyfriend jeans...

FIERCE

If this demo is for real, I can see this duo taking over the stage in the most out of control, over the top outfits. No pants allowed, face zippers, eye patches, and stripper boots galore. I can't wait!
(For the record, I'm not crazy about the song. I can't deny blasting Poker Face when I'm getting ready to go out, though. Holler.)

Rock Me Now

This song seriously gives me chills, so I had to look up the video. There isn't an official music video but this version over some fantastic movies seems to work quite well. The Waking Life intro especially gets me.
